Drawing of Solor

Laerle, Joris Joostensz.

The book labelled “Mayer” in which Joris Joostensz. Laerle drew many fish and coastlines, also contains a sketch of the fortress at Solor near Flores, which at the time of the Fifth Expedition was held by the Portuguese. It is unclear why the book contains this depiction of Solor, as the expedition never went to the island. The drawing shows the Portuguese fortifications and the hilly hinterland of the island, with villages in the hills.
