The VOC lodge at Surat

In the spring of 1629, Pieter van den Broecke left Surat for good. He had been director there from 1620 to 1628. According to his retelling, the governor of Surat and his nobles, they were very saddened by his departure. The image here depicts the VOC lodge in Surat. Various Indian and Dutch people stand in front of the building. Indians and Dutchmen stand in the courtyard, where some goats also roam around.
