Battles at Portudale

Anoniem / Anonymous

The print depicts three separate military confrontations taking place around Portudale (in present-day Senegal.) On the left, a sea battle with a Portuguese fleet on 11 June 1601. The next day, ships of Van Spilbergen's fleet repulsed an indigenous attack, depicted right. Then, on 13 June, the ships encountered a lone Portuguese caravel, which they managed to take. This last military confrontation is depicted in the round inset in the middle.
