Map of the plantations north of the Commewijne river

Helleday, Adrianus Hendricus

This map shows the lots and their hinterlands laying north of the Commewijne river.

The scope ranges from the western (left on the map) coast near the Bramspunt to the Livonia plantation located to the northeast (right above on the map) inside the Warapa Creek.

All green-coloured lots are designated, the hinterlands that can be added to these lots contain their extent in Surinamese acres (1 acres equals 0,43 hectares) and the red borders indicate lots which can be sold freely after the forest is cleared.

The detailed elucidations mention draining problems.

The projected canals indicated by the letters A to G in the planned assignment of the new ‘hinterlands’ 1 up to 43, outlined in red, were to overcome these.

The parcels marked in yellow, already partially assigned, could be added to the existing plantations (green) along the rivers and creeks.

At a later stage, the dotted sections could be divided up between new enterprises farther inland and the enlarged river plantations. -The largest part of Helleday’s project, the sizeable block numbered 1 to 37 was actually never carried out.

Additional details of the planned extension are elaborated on VEL 1849 and 1851 till 1854.

The Nieuw Amsterdam fortress and two redoubts are depicted for orientation.

Scale of 1400 Chains of 66 Rhineland Feet = 324 ‘strepen’.

A copy of the map is available: VEL 1850A.
