When plans were made for the improvement of Surinam's defenses in response to the outbreak of the Fourth Andgo-Dutch War (1780-1784) Johann Friedrich Ferdinand Wollant proposed several improvements for the redoubt Leiden. His project plan suggested a counterscarp with a covered road could be constructed to be defended by ‘small arms’, that is infantry men with hand guns, plus an extra, small ravelin on the landward side. In this supplementary design, Wollant wanted to strengthen Leiden further by placing a barrier 'to fire on the blind spot' on the seaside. The plans were never carried out. Leiden remained unprotected on its northern side and was taken by British troops without much effort in a later conflict in 1804.
