Joris van Spilbergen in an audience with Vimala Dharma Suriya on Ceylon, 1602.

This Ceylonese king undertook and won a battle against the Portuguese (see remarks accompanying: Koninklijke Bibliotheek, inv. nr. 189 A 6 part II, p. 15). However the Portuguese kept up their efforts to bring Ceylon within Portuguese control. The king saw the Dutch as an ally against the Portuguese.
