Coastline profiles of South Sulawesi and Selayar

Coastline profiles of South Sulawesi and Selayar

Jolinck, Heyndrick Dircxz.

After passing the island of Madura, the four ships of the Tweede Schipvaart sent to the Moluccas sailed northeast towards Sulawesi. Here they first sighted the southwestern tip of the island, before passing through the Strait of Selayar, between Sulawesi and the island of Selayar. Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck, helmsman of the Amsterdam, drew these profiles in his journal: first two profiles of the coast of Sulawesi, as seen roughly from the south at a distance of about six miles. Underneath, two profiles of the Strait of Selayar, the first showing the opening of the Strait of Selayar as seen from the west, and the second showing the island of Selayar, here called ‘Desolium’ as seen in the south from the Strait itself.
