The map was drawn in 1664 by Jan Hendricksen de Jonge and copied between 1665 and 1668, probably in Johannes Vingboons' studio.

In 1662 the Dutch forts on Formosa were captured by the Chinese. In 1663 and 1664 Admiral Baltasar Bort failed in his attempts to recapture them, but he did succeed in occupying the city of Amoy in Fukien.
