Varani

Sri Lanka

The Company preached Protestantism to the local inhabitants on Ceylon. Baldaeus, the clergyman who headed the congregations of northern Ceylon from 1656 to 1665, regularly toured his parish. He described Varani, once known as Waranni, as rich in tropical fruits with a rather dilapidated church building. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
