The estate of Tanjong West viewed from the tower

Rach, Johannes

View from the tower of the Tanjong West estate (Barat), also known as Oostvriesland.

At that time the estate was owned by Jan Andries Duurkoop, who had a herd of 5000 cattle and supplied the Company with dairy produce.

The tower, some 25 metres high, functioned as the entrance gate to the Tanjong West estate, 30 kilometres south of Batavia. The journey from Batavia to Tanjong West upstream along the Ciliwung River took 48 hours, while the return journey downstream took just six hours.
