Map of North and South America
Visscher I, Nicolaas / Visscher II, Nicolaas
Map of North and South America.
Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae.
The map features several small illustrations, such as war between Indian tribes in South America and a figure in a hammock.
Bottom left New Zealand has been partially sketched in.
Top left a dedication to Cornelius Witsen, with coat of arms and helmet borne by four angels.
This map by Nicolaas Visscher II (1649-1702) is an amended reprint of a chart published by his father Nicolaas Visscher I in 1658. The map significantly influenced the maps of America that were published later in the 17th and 18th centuries. Particularly the east coast of North America has been rendered quite accurately. The same cannot be said for the American west coast, where California is depicted as an island.
