Map of the new extension of Paramaribo

Lieftinck, Franciscus L.

Title Leupe: Plan van de verder nieuwe uitleg van Paramaribo, zynde een vervolg van de nieuwe Uytleg van 1769.

This map shows one of the plans for the subdivisions of the three major expansions of Paramaribo on its southern and western sides around 1770, drawn up on the orders of Governor Jan Nepveu. It relates to the second stage; the construction of a quarter between Rust en Vredestraat, Gravenstraat, Wanicastraat (‘Nieuwe Weg’) and Weidestraat. As it turned out, only part of this neighbourhood was to be completed at the time: until well into the nineteenth century, the Wanicastraat (indicated here as ‘Fiottestraat’) would remain the western border of Paramaribo.

North is upper right.
