Virasundara is put to death

Waasbergen, Johannes Janssonius / Anoniem / Anonymous

Virasundara is put to death. Virasundara was a Ceylonese warrior who was sentenced to death in the late sixteenth century. By condemning him to death Rajasingha, the king of Kandy, Sri Lanka, hoped to restore internal order and keep the Portuguese at bay.

The sentence was carried out by stoning Virasundara's head with wooden balls until he was killed.
