Linschoten, Jan Huygen van / Doetechum, Joannes / Baptista à / van / Ketel, Gerard

Title page of Jan Huygen van Linschoten’s Voyagie ofte Schipvaart, an account of the first and second expeditions Dutch fleets undertook along the north coast of present-day Russia in order to find a northeast passage to Asia. Jan Huygen van Linschoten was a driving force behind these expeditions and personally participated in these first two attempts.

The ornaments around the title depict the inhabitants of these polar regions as well as animals, including cod, a polar bear and what most likely represents a walrus.

The oval inset below shows a map of the Yugor Strait, here called Fretum Nassovicum, the Nassau Strait.
