This map of the Bay of Portobelo in present-day Panama shows the various rivers flowing into the sea in and around the bay, as well as the Spanish settlements and fortifications in the area. Like many of the other maps of the Spanish possessions in the Americas in this collection, the map seems to be based on one with a military purpose. No other copies by Vingboons of this map are known to exist.
Legend: A. Het groote Casteel bij het stedeken, B. Het stedeken, C. Een groot Casteel op d’Oostsijd vande mondt, D. Een clein Casteel op de westsijd vande mondt, E. Een cleijn casteel bij een Riviertjen 2. mijl bij [….] Porto Bello, F. twee stedekens inde mondt van Porto Bello.
Part of the Carte di Castello, collected by Cosimo de Medici III in 1667 and 1669 during his tours through Europe. Cosimo III bought the 66 watercolours by Vingboons in December 1667 in Amsterdam, through mediation of Pieter Blaeu.
