View of the blockade of Manila

Vingboons, Johannes

Manila was the Spanish headquarters in Southeast Asia, and the VOC blockaded it several times. Here, the blockade of 1647 is presumably depicted.

Other copy: Ă–sterreichische Nationalbibliothek: Van der Hem 49:29. (Not in the AMH, but available through the website of the library itself.) Nationaal Archief VELH0619.69 is largely similar tot his image as well, although the blockade has been omitted there.

Part of the Carte di Castello, collected by Cosimo de Medici III in 1667 and 1669 during his tours through Europe. Cosimo III bought the 66 watercolours by Vingboons in December 1667 in Amsterdam, through mediation of Pieter Blaeu.
