Fort

Provintia, fort (Taiwan)

After a Chinese revolt against VOC rule on Taiwan in 1652, during which part of Saccam was destroyed, it was decided to build fort Provintia so that Saccam could be defended in the future. It was finished in 1653 and had two bastions. When, in 1661, the Chinese warlord Koxinga invaded Taiwan, the fort turned out to be ill-equipped to stand up to a strong and well-prepared adversary. It capitulated after only a few days.
