Kharg

After 1750 the VOC wanted to set up a lodge at Kharg, an island in the north of the Persian Gulf near Basra. In Kareek, as Kharg was also known, Javanese sugar and Indian textiles were offered for sale. A trading post was set up in Khark in fort Mosselsteijn in November 1753. This fort was built between November 1753 and December 1754. However it soon transpired the outpost was unprofitable, partly as a result of the high costs of building and manning the fort there, known as Mosselstein. The VOC left Khark on January 1, 1766 when the fort was handed over to Mir Mohanna, head of the coastal settlement, Bandar-e Rig.
