Kharg

Iran

After 1750 the VOC wanted to set up a lodge at Kharg, an island in the north of the Persian Gulf near Basra. The VOC sold Javanese sugar and Indian textiles there. A trading post was set up in Kharg in November 1753. This post was subsequently fortified, and was named fort Mosselsteijn, built between November 1753 and December 1754 on the easternmost point of the island. However the post turned out to be unprofitable, partly as a result of the high costs of building and manning the fort. The VOC left Kharg on January 1, 1766, handing over the fort to Mir Mohanna, head of the coastal settlement, Bandar-e Rig.
